Plume

About

Plume Inc. is a cloud platform that powers smart WiFi for over 400 internet service providers, reaching 1 billion connected devices worldwide. It turns commodity routers into adaptive, intelligent networks, handling self-optimizing WiFi, cybersecurity, and analytics.

At Plume, I led the comprehensive redesign of Plume's design system, touching more than a billion unique devices globally. I modernized the entire visual language (colors, typography, iconography, and illustrations) while developing a robust component library.I directed the design and development of Plume mobile app, leading a team of over 25 engineers through all phases from concept to launch. Collaborated with cross-functional stakeholders to align business objectives and user requirements.

User research shaped every major design decision. I ran studies to uncover friction points and validate solutions, then used ProtoPie and Figma to prototype and test interaction patterns before handing off to engineering.

Interaction design

I transformed the Plume app for tablets. The main challenge was adapting tab bar navigation for larger screens. I designed a dock that anchors to six screen positions. I used ProtoPie to prototype and validate the new interaction patterns.

Graphs

I worked on recreating UI and UX for all Plume graphs. The challenge was building a structural foundation flexible enough to support multiple graph types across two different apps and Android and iOS platforms.

A digital graph shows LTE data usage of 24.8 GB for 2021, with monthly bars and a horizontal line at 5 GB. Buttons labeled Today, 7 days, and 30 days are at the bottom.
A digital graph showing data usage over time with monthly bars divided into categories: social media in pink, games in yellow, and other in teal. The total data used is 29.2 GB, with an average of 6.9 GB per day. The graph spans from mid-January to mid-February, with controls for viewing different time periods at the bottom.
A digital activity tracker showing online activity over a week. It displays various bars representing time spent on social media, games, and other activities, with total hours per day. The chart indicates an average daily activity of 26 hours and 15 minutes.

Design system

I led the comprehensive redesign of Plume's design system. I modernized the entire visual language typography, iconography, and illustrations, color scales and developed a robust component library. Preparing and launching the design system took over six months. Developing and maintaining it took years. At the start of the process, I partnered with a coworker to audit existing design patterns. Our goal was to identify the most universal components while keeping the total count to a minimum. Here are the main components that emerged from that process.

A collection of wireframes for a user interface design, displaying various page layouts and components such as list, header, tile, and device sections, with labels and annotations.
Flowchart and wireframes of a mobile app setup process, including onboarding, home, zones, shield, navigation, settings, employee, and pod setup screens.

I also created a new color system with many new shades, a simplified 50–900 naming convention, and ensured colors are easy to use and understand for both designers and developers. All colors meet accessibility standards and include contrast-ratio markers with thumbs-up icons to clearly indicate which colors can be used with text and icons.

Illustration style guide

I led a multi-month update to our illustration style in collaboration with the talented illustrator Fred. We explored ten different directions and incorporated extensive team input throughout the process. The work evolved into a comprehensive, robust illustration system, along with a style guide I created to clearly define our illustration standards.

Visual design

I designed posters for Plume's Ukraine war relief initiative, which provided free WiFi at railway hubs across Central Europe.

Mobile app

Two smartphones displaying different apps with network and employee management features on a dark background, and a logo resembling a stylized hexagon with interconnected lines.

I also owned the Plume mobile app end-to-end and contributed to the web app and Uprise, a multifamily property management platform. This was a large chunk of my work which I cannot share publicaly so here's a snapshot of that work.

Dribbble

A collage of various technology-themed images, including circuit boards, graphs, digital illustrations, and abstract designs.

I ran weekly Dribbble sessions where the team prepared posts for our page and critiqued each other's work. Teammates said it became a collaborative highlight of their week. Not all the shots below are mine but I managed and curated every post.
